Charlie

Charlie’s postcard series explores some of the terminology used to describe gender identity and sexual identity. Charlie felt strongly that definitions were very important to everybody throughout this project. Charlie wanted to find a way that made people pay more attention to them. Charlie has used a simple design and clear text against different coloured backgrounds for each in order to help people recognise difference. Hundreds of copies of the postcards were printed and distributed so that people could collect and take away their own sets.

Charlie says:

Originally there were twelve designs, but some people were upset that their terms were not there, so I created more so that they were more representative. There’s a full set of them in the sexual health clinic, and the Mayor of Brighton & Hove took a set to have in his parlour.
